Can I Freeze Breakfast Casserole

Recipe of the Day: Breakfast Sausage Casserole | Trisha’s Southern Kitchen | Food Network

This is the perfect casserole for freezing. Bake the casserole according to directions and allow it to cool completely. After it is completely cooled, you can place it in an airtight container or zip top bag. Lay it flat in your freezer for up to a month. You can also cover your baking dish tightly with aluminum foil, then at least two layers of saran wrap.

When youre ready to reheat the casserole, take it out of the freezer and transfer to an oven safe dish if you froze it in a ziplock bag. If you froze it in the original baking dish, be sure to remove any plastic wrap. Bake the casserole in your oven for about 25 minutes at 350F, or until the center is warm. No need to thaw. This makes it easy to have on hand for the holidays, too!

Do I Have To Use Bread

Bread or potatoes, yes. Besides eggs, bread is the main ingredient. To avoid a spongey, wet dish, this breakfast casserole needs structure at the bottom. You see, when eggs bake, they release a lot of liquid. Chunks of crusty bread soak up some liquid so the casserole is chunky and textured, not flat and wet. If youre looking for something without this starchy addition, crustless vegetable quiche is a great option.

Preheat The Oven And Cook The Sausage

Before you do anything else, you will need to preheat your oven to 350 F. Then, spray a 9×13 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and set it to the side for the time being.

Take out a large skillet and place it on your stove. Turn the heat to medium-high and toss in the breakfast sausage. Continue cooking the sausage until it’s no longer pink, which should take about 7 minutes. Use a spoon or something similar to break apart the sausage as it cooks. Now, you can remove the pan from heat and set it to the side.

Mix The Eggs Sour Cream Salt And Pepper

    Breakfast Sausage Casserole Recipe

For this step, you will need a large mixing bowl. Toss in the eggs, sour cream, salt, and pepper, and mix until well-combined. Once everything is mixed well, toss in the cheddar and pepper jack cheeses. “The secret ingredient in this casserole is the sour cream. It makes the eggs really fluffy and gives them a nice flavor,” Morone notes. “You could actually always use sour cream in your scrambled eggs instead of milk or heavy cream for a better flavor and texture.”

Now, add the remaining green onions, the cooked sausage, and the hash browns to the mix. Remember, you should have let the frozen hash browns thaw ahead of time. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.

Sausage Hashbrown Breakfast Casserole! An easy, gluten

The first step to making delicious breakfast casserole is to cook the sausage and vegetables in a large skillet over medium heat. The onions and peppers in this casserole wont cook anymore once they are mixed into the the casserole so I like to get them nice and soft while I brown the sausage mixture.

After the veggies have cooked, add the spinach and let it wilt for just a few minutes. I also love the pretty colors in this casserole with the the red pepper and spinach!

Many breakfast casseroles use soaked bread for texture but I keep this breakfast casserole gluten-free by adding frozen hashbrowns. They make it hearty and give it a great consistency.

Another variation of this casserole is the Turkey Sausage & Egg Casserole and our Bacon Breakfast Casserole and we LOVE it becausebacon!

I asked my husband to describe this casserole. He said, Its like a sausage, egg and cheese sandwich without the bun. We had some nice little rolls, so I took my slice of casserole and made a sandwich! The rest of the family preferred to eat theirs without bread.

We had a little leftover casserole so I cut it into serving sized pieces, wrapped it in a paper towel and put in freezer bags in the freezer. This will make a great breakfast in the future.

You can add more eggs if youve got more people or hungry people to feed. Reduce the eggs and milk a little bit for a smaller portion. My son likes more eggs, less milk and the longer cook time to avoid the soggy egg texture.
